Westerners are not only known as history ignoramuses, but double dumbass history ignoramuses when it comes to Pop Music history. Since I'm the one-and-only Historyscoper (tm), let me quickly bring you up to speed before you dive into my Master Historyscope.
Pop music history begins in 1955 in the U.S. and U.K., and ends in 1999; short for popular music, pop and rock were roughly synonymous until the late 1960s; pop music (characterized by wide appeal) should be differentiated from chart music, which incl. country, dance, Latin, rock, and urban music; pop music are generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format with verse-chorus structure along with repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks. Pop music genres incl. Brill Bldg. Pop, Bubblegum Pop, Christian pop, Country pop, Pop Rock, Progressive Pop, Psychedelic Pop, Space Age Pop, Sunshine (Soft) Pop, Surf Pop, Synthpop (Synth-pop) (Techno-pop) (Synthesizer Pop), Teen Pop, and Traditional Pop (Classic Pop) (Pop Standards).
